Ap. Baxter et A. Eicker, LLOYD,CURTIS,GATES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN GANODERMATALES (BASIDIOMYCOTA), Mycotaxon, 67, 1997, pp. 139-154
A recent study of the scientific contributions of C.G. Lloyd (1859-192
6) demonstrated that he had a controversial but broad impact on mycolo
gy. We have focused on specific areas of his legacy as part of the gro
undwork for a review of southern African Ganodermatales. Lloyd noted 1
6 species from this region, embodying some 13 taxa; two of the seven h
e described as new are still accepted. His determinations must be inte
rpreted within his Friesian system, into which he tried to integrate s
pore characters without compromising his stated beliefs. Lloyd grasped
the basic ganodermoid basidiospore structure, and recognised it as ta
xonomically significant, but he emphasised features of the basidioma a
s generic descriptors. We reflect this in a synoptic key to his ganode
rmoid groups. Among the published opinions that we encountered is that
few of Lloyd's polypore taxa are still accepted, and that he negative
ly influenced polypore: taxonomy by mocking innovation. Nonetheless, h
is approach was calculated, sequential and pragmatic. We support the v
iew that his efforts are of continuing significance.
