M. Ferrandiere et al., SEPTICEMIA AND MENINGITIS DUE TO STREPTOCOCCUS-ZOOEPIDEMICUS, European journal of clinical microbiology & infectious diseases, 17(4), 1998, pp. 290-291
A case of septicemia and meningitis due to Streptococcus zooepidemicus
in an immunocompetent patient is reported. This organism is an uncomm
on human pathogen that sometimes causes severe infection, usually in i
mmunocompromised patients. In the reported case, the patient required
to be mechanically ventilated for one week and was treated with intrav
enous ampicillin and gentamicin. He recovered and was discharged from
hospital three weeks after the initial presentation. Streptococcus zoo
epidemicus sensitive to all penicillins, was isolated from all blood c
ultures and the cerebrospinal fluid.
