The development of brain metastases in patients with advanced cancer i
s associated with increased morbidity and diminished longevity. Pallia
tive treatment modalities focus predominantly on improving quality of
life. Well-established beneficial treatments include the use of cortic
osteroids, radiotherapy, and surgery. Management issues that require f
urther exploration and clarification include the dosages of glucocorti
coids, the prophylactic use of anticonvulsants and the indications for
radiosurgery.
