The retentions of 72 substituted N-benzylideneanilines (NBA) in normal
phase liquid chromatography were determined using seven eluents prepa
red with heptan, tetrahydrofuran, octanol-1, and ethyl acetate. princi
pal component analysis (PCA) and correspondence factor analysis (CFA)
were applied to describe the behavior of the compounds. With PCA, only
one factor is necessary to model the retention CFA offers an analysis
of second-order effects and shows how the retention of the relevant c
ompounds is related to the electronic effects. A multilinear regressio
n with the Hammett's constants of substituents is established. The inf
luence of the substituent position on retention is discussed.
