The paper considers a synchronous machine excited by the energy of mag
netic field harmonics. Analysis of a mathematical model of a harmonic
excitation system has been carried out with the use of such concepts a
s ''undistorted e.m.f.'' and ''commutation inductive reactance'', It i
s shown that, when the generator considered operates in parallel with
an electrical network, such a model can be used for calculating its st
eady-state conditions. Under transients the model becomes incorrect. W
hen the generator operates with an autonomous load it is necessary to
calculate the commutation inductive reactance with allowance for the l
