POSSIBILITY OF ESTIMATING THE COORDINATES OF A LIGHTNING DISCHARGE BYSINGLE-POINT MEASUREMENT OF ITS ELECTROMAGNETIC-RADIATION

Equations have been derived for electromagnetic radiation from lightni ng which are less restricted than a dipole approximation. Amendments t o dipole electromagnetic radiation are calculated. A criterion is give n, the fulfilment of which makes it possible to neglect radiation at t he ends of a lightning channel. The possibility is shown of distinguis hing, from a large number of lightning discharges, those which have a straight initial part of the channel. The possibility of determining a horizontal lightning discharge and its altitude is also shown. (C) 19 98 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
