A samarium(II) iodide-promoted sequence consisting of an intermolecula
r ketyl-olefin coupling followed by an intramolecular nucleophilic acy
l substitution is described. This process leads to functionalized six-
to eight-membered monocyclic and bicyclic ring systems in moderate to
