We report a case of congenital herpes simplex virus type 2 infection (
HSV-2) characterized by clinical manifestations including recurrent sk
in lesions, chorioretinitis and microphthalmia, without involvement of
central nervous system. Our case, treated with acyclovir for fifteen
months, demonstrates that not all congenital HSV infections have extre
mely severe consequences for the child. The utility of acyclovir in th
e long-term treatment of congenital HSV infection is discussed.
