Pt. Ruiz et Rmri. Escursell, RAPE VICTIM AND GUILT - A SEXIST OR CULTURAL ATTITUDE - GENDER AND CROSS-CULTURAL-COMPARISON BETWEEN STUDENTS FROM MEXICO AND SPAIN, Interamerican journal of psychology, 32(1), 1998, pp. 53-72
In this paper we present a gender and transcultural comparison. 457 Sp
anish students and 517 from Mexico answered a questionnarie about rape
, and they expressed the guilty that was given to the victim. They wer
e also asked to fill a Conservatism Scale. The sample was formed by un
iversitary syudents from Mexico and Spain. In both countries students
came from the School of Medicine (UNAM in Mexico, UAB in Spain), Psych
ology (UNAM, Campus Iztacala in Mexico, UAB iii Spain), and Law (UAM-A
in Mexico and UAB in Spain). We found that the myth variables, such a
s victim's gender or her respectability are relevant in order to deter
mine the mechanisms by which the victim is judged. Both samples, also,
follow the same trends. But, Spanish students (mate and female) blame
d more the rape victim than Mexican ones. Although the last were more
conservative. The men in both samples attributed more guilt. The resul
ts are disscussed around the multidimensionality of the phenomenon and
the considerations of the cultural contexts.
