We report a systematic study of PL processes in 2DEGs close to the v =
1 quantum Hall state. The critical importance of the Coulomb interact
ion between the photo-excited hole and the 2DEG is demonstrated in a s
tructure where we can vary the electric field across the QW and thus t
he electron-hole separation. We find bound states form between the pho
to-excited valence band hole and quasiparticle excitations of the v =
1 state, as well as ''shake-up'' of spin-wave excitations upon recombi
nation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
