We have investigated magnetotransport through two-dimensional lateral
superlattices with periods a of 100 and 120 nm prepared on a shallow,
high mobility heterojunction. Measurements of the longitudinal and Hal
l resistance were carried out at a temperature of 50 mK with the bias
voltage of the top gate as parameter. The longitudinal resistance disp
lays an unprecedented richness in oscillatory features of both semicla
ssical and quantum mechanical origin. The results are discussed on the
basis of the zero field miniband energy spectrum and the subband spli
tting of single Landau-levels. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ
