The damping of the free vibrations of laminated composite conical shel
ls is investigated. Finite element analysis of conical shells is perfo
rmed by using the first-order shear deformation theory (FOSDT). Based
on proposals of other researchers a damping model is developed in conn
ection with the energy method (EM) and applied in order to calculate t
he modal loss factors of laminated composite conical shells. Numerical
examples for shells with linearly varying thickness are presented. Ex
amples of calculation show a good agreement with experimental and nume
rical results from the literature. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Scie
