This paper presents a conceptually simple derivation of the equilibriu
m distribution of media sizes obtained in steady state milling in tumb
ling media mills. The method is used to derive the well-known relation
for spherical media and it is extended to a relation for cylindrical
media. A test method is given for obtaining accurate data for cylindri
cal media and it is shown how the wear law is determined from the data
. Tests on the equilibrium charge of cylindrical media of high density
alumina taken from an industrial mill dry grinding silica gave a Bond
linear wear law. The wear constants were 1.0 mu m of radius per hour
and 1.05 mu m per hour of each end: total time in the mill was about 4
30 days for any piece of media of initial diameter and length of 31.6
mm. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
