Abstract
In numerical simulations of unstable flows the absolute or convective nature of the instability can be modified by numerical effects. We int roduce a convective/absolute analysis of the dispersion relations asso ciated with discretized operators. This analysis leads to conditions o n the discretization parameters in order to avoid numerical transition from absolute to convective instability and vice versa. In numerical simulations of non-parallel flows, local numerical transitions, of the kind described in this paper, could lead to the wrong global dynamics . (C) 1998 Academic Press.
