Before new high resolution geophysical results were acquired during th
e PLABAS seaward cruise of the estuary mouth of the Gironde River (sou
thwest of France), the off shore extension of the palaeovalley was unk
nown. One seismic section shows the off shore palaeovalley incision. F
rom this processed seismic line, it is possible to interpret the infil
ling of the valley in terms of stratigraphic sequences. The seismic se
quences are limited by unconformities already described in the inner e
stuary by Alien and Posamentier (1993, 1994) They form a 5th-order str
atigraphic unit (20 000 years). (C) Academie des sciences/Elsevier, Pa
