The object-oriented approach provides an appropriate context for an in
tegrated description of finite element related techniques within a sin
gle unified environment, combining symbolic and numerical manipulation
s, graphics and expertise. This paper discusses and illustrates the ke
y features of such an integrated environment which includes an object-
oriented graphic interactive environment, object-oriented operators fo
r symbolic mathematical derivations, an object-oriented finite element
environment, and its extension to object-oriented knowledge based exp
ert assistance. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd and Civil-Comp Ltd. All
