Changes in the work function and adsorption energy of ultrathin layers
of Dy, Nd and Li deposited on preoxidized Mo(112) and W(111) faces ha
ve been investigated using the method of CPD and adsorption isobars. I
t has been found that the preadsorbed oxygen brings about a lowering o
f the work function minim um for the co-adsorption system and increasi
ng of the area occupied by the metallic adsorbate, that is relevant to
the work function minimum. Discussed are the results obtained for dif
ferent values of initial oxygen coverage. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Lt
