PVC films filled with various mass fractions of MnCl2 were prepared. T
he X-ray diffraction spectra indicated the presence of mesomorphous ph
ases at certain filling levels. The infrared absorption spectra reveal
ed some absorption bands, significantly sensitive to the mode of filli
ng. The UV/VIS absorption spectra (200-800 nm) resulted in two optical
gaps of filling level dependent widths. The analysis of ESR spectra i
mplied an octahedral coordination of Mn ions within the PVC matrix. Th
e implications of the de magnetic susceptibility data were discussed o
n the basis of the one dimensional Ising antiferromagnetic interaction
model, assuming a distribution of the magnetic centers along the poly
meric chains. The calculated magnetic interaction coupling constant wa
s found to depend linearly on the MnCl2 filling level. (C) 1998 Elsevi
