The screening of the electron-phonon interaction due to a quasi-one-di
mensional (Q1D) electron gas is investigated. The contribution of the
electron-phonon interaction to the ground-state energy of the Q1D pola
ron gas in different semiconductor quantum-well-wire structures is cal
culated within the Hartree-Fock and the random-phase approximation. Th
e influences of the width of the quantum-well wire and the electron de
nsity on the ground-state energy of the polaron gas are studied. We fo
und that the screening due to the electron gas reduces the effective e
lectron-phonon coupling in a Q1D system appreciably and the contributi
on of the electron-phonon interaction to the ground-state energy of th
e polaron gas decreases with increasing electron density.
