Irradiation of digermoxanes (R3GeOGeR3) in CCl4-CH3CN in the presence
of 1,2-dicyanonaphthalene (DCN) afforded chlorogermanes, digermyperoxi
des, and hexachloroethane. Fluorescence of DCN was quenched by R3GeOGe
R3 with a rate of 10(9) M(-1)s(-1) order. A mechanism of free-radical
chlorination involving R3GeOGeR3 cation radicals is proposed.
