The chemical potential associated with surfaces of stressed solids is
found to consist of four terms, instead of the widely accepted two. Th
e boundary conditions are also affected by the presence of a surface d
eformation-dependent surface stress. The stability of the surfaces of
stressed solids is reinvestigated, using the revised equations. It is
found that the stability condition is sensitive to the sign of the app
lied stress. (C) 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
