Sb. Martin et al., AN INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL APPROACH TO SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTING - A CASE-STUDY, International journal of sport psychology, 29(2), 1998, pp. 170-186
Much of what occurs between the sport psychology consultant (SPC) and
athletes is educationally-based (Danish, Petitpas, & Hale, 1993). A ma
jor role of the SPC is to provide a learning environment that enables
athletes to move toward becoming their own teachers and counselors (La
Rose, 1988). Through the combination of educational counseling methods
and sport science training the SPC can provide an optimal environment
for facilitating the athletes' understanding of relevant examples and
cues within their particular sport(s). The purpose of this article is
to propose an integrative psychoeducational counseling model designed
to facilitate the sport psychology consulting process. The framework
for this model was developed from a behavioral consultation flowchart
(Thompson & Rudolph, 1996), a goal attainment scaling procedure (Marti
n & Thompson, 1995), and reality therapy procedures (Glasser, 1965). T
he model contains the essential elements that increase the probability
of a successful SPC-athlete relationship. building trust identifying
problem areas, determining interventions, and providing feedback. A ca
se study application is offered as a model for further research..
