We review the properties of infrared synchrotron radiation and particu
larly those of the beamlines at the NSLS, Brookhaven National Laborato
ry. We show how this unique, pulsed broadband source with its 1000-fol
d brightness advantage over thermal sources has been utilized for rese
arch programs in surface science, solid-state physics and microscopy a
nd discuss plans for 5 new beamlines at the NSLS.
