A storage ring acts as an approximate point source in the far-infrared
spectrum with a much greater intensity than traditional thermal sourc
es. It is therefore potentially a very useful source for high-resoluti
on spectroscopy below 1000 to 1500 cm(-1). Electron beam motions and t
he pulsed nature of the source are two noise sources which have to be
controlled if useful results are to be obtained. Examples of high-reso
lution spectra of IBr and HClO4 are given.
