Abstract
The technical design of the silicon tracking system for ATLAS is descr ibed. It contains 61 m(2) of strip detectors, must function after inte grated doses in excess of 10(14) protons/cm(2), and maintain mechanica l tolerances characteristic of silicon detector resolutions over scale s in excess of 1 m.
