The Cramer-Rao lower bound on estimator variance is used as a tool for
assessing radiation detector requirements for nuclear medicine imagin
g. The classical bound for unbiased estimators is reviewed and its rel
ationship to the well-known propagation-of-error formula is demonstrat
ed. The uniform Cramer-Rao bound is described for situations where unb
iased estimation is impractical such as in tomographic imaging. The bo
unds are used to evaluate the necessary detector requirements for a Cs
I(Tl)/Si photodiode scintillation camera, and to compare the performan
ce of a Compton-scatter camera to that of a parallel-hole collimator/A
nger camera system. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B,V, All ri
