The muon and neutral hadron detector of the BaBar experiment for the P
EP-II Asymmetric B-factory at SLAG uses Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs
) as active detectors. A large fraction of the total system, which con
sists of approximately 800 chambers for an overall surface of 2000 m(2
), has already been built and tested in cosmic rays. Preliminary resul
ts of the operating characteristics with a new non-flammable and envir
onmentally safe gas mixture are reported. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.
