The design and first performances of a new hadronic calorimeter for th
e experiment Focus (E831) at Fermilab are presented. It is a sampling
calorimeter, with 28 iron (passive) and scintillator (active) planes.
The active planes are composed of tiles read out by Wavelength Shifter
fibers spliced to clear fibers. This is the first the calorimeter act
ually used (1997)in a running experiment. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.
