Abstract
New deep-rowed (PASISAR) seismic data of the KAIKO-TOKAI'96 cruise (R/ V L'Atalante), combined with SAR side-scan sonar, multibeam bathymetri c data and previously available data, confirm that the backstop of the eastern Nankai wedge, close to the Izu collision zone, is affected by pervasive right-lateral strike-slip faulting. We interpret this tecto nic pattern as the result of the combination of shear partitioning due to oblique subduction with the effect of the Izu collision. (C) Acade mie des sciences/Elsevier, Paris.
