On the time scale of a few hundred femtoseconds to a few picoseconds a
fter electron-hole pair creation in alkali halides, observations have
revealed aspects of the growth and evolution of some familiar defect a
nd self-trapped exciton (STE) absorption bands, as well as absorption
features at the earliest time which may be related to vibrationally ho
t and relaxing two-center self-trapped holes (B band). We present the
first observation of a B band in CsBr, and present observations of typ
e II STE, type III STE, and F center absorption formed in NaCl after e
lectron-hole pair generation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All right
