Abstract
An epidemic model is presented to provide theoretical considerations f or temperature induction of bacteriophage lambda in Escherichia coli. Based upon model predictions for bioreactor operations, the optimal mo de for reporter-protein induction is fed-batch since augmentation of s usceptible cells enhances lambda infection in batch cultures and washo ut of infected cells decreases induction performance in CSTR operation s. Experimental results also support that batch mode of operation is b etter than CSTR.
