Abstract
A contact mechanics approach, based on the implementation of the bound ary element method, is used to analyse the stress distribution and fri ctional slip behaviour around spherical inclusions and cylindrical fib res embedded in infinite dissimilar matrices. A comparison between the boundary element and the corresponding finite element solutions shows good agreement between the two approaches. A range of inclusion/matri x elastic material properties is covered in the analysis together with a mismatch in thermal properties and thermal cooling.
