A zigzag defect-free surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal d
isplay (SSFLCD) has been fabricated using polyimide RN1199 (Nissan Che
mical). The superiority of polyimide RN1199 in comparison with other c
onventional polyimide films is shown in terms of the observation of mi
croscopic textures of aligned FLC and electrooptical bistability. From
the results of characterization of polyimide films, such as the obser
vation of surface morphology with an atomic force microscope (AFM) and
the measurement of switching current, it is concluded that the format
ion of C2-uniform state may be attributed to the smooth surface of PI-
RN1199 with a small pretilt angle this, in turn, results in excellent
memory capability with high contrast ratio.
