Mj. Sullivan et al., PUBLIC-POLICY LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR PSYCHOLOGISTS, Professional psychology, research and practice, 29(4), 1998, pp. 322-327
Despite the massive changes in the health care system affecting their
practices, few psychologists become involved in public policy activiti
es that can regulate this health care system. In addition to elected o
ffice, there are many opportunities for psychologists to work behind t
he scenes in public policy leadership positions. First-person accounts
illustrating such opportunities are provided by a gubernatorial appoi
ntee, an American Psychological Association Congressional Science Fell
ow, and a United States Senate staff person. The opportunity to serve
in such capacities is an important means by which psychology can contr
ibute to society and fulfill its societal obligations.
