D. Drotar, TRAINING STUDENTS FOR CAREERS IN MEDICAL SETTINGS - A GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PEDIATRIC PSYCHOLOGY, Professional psychology, research and practice, 29(4), 1998, pp. 402-404
A graduate program of research and clinical training that was designed
to equip psychologists to assume diverse professional roles in pediat
ric medical settings is described. Having evolved from a long history
of collaboration between faculty in a department of psychology and sch
ool of medicine, this program features specialized interdisciplinary t
raining in research and clinical care, including consultation and coll
aborative skills and scholarly activities, such as preparing manuscrip
ts and research grants. The program has facilitated students' careers,
employment in medical settings, and scholarly productivity in their f
ields of interest. Experiences from this program may be useful in the
development of graduate training programs designed to equip psychologi
sts to assume the diverse professional roles necessary to function eff
ectively in the academic medical health centers of the future.
