Abstract
Optical absorption spectra of the Nd3+ ion in sodium borate glasses ha ve been recorded in the UV-VIS-NIR region. A Taylor series expansion o f the intermediate coupling energy levels of the Na3+ ion wa adopted f or the theoretical evaluation of the experimental spectra. A numerical calculation yielded the values of various interaction parameters such as the Slater-Condon (F-2, F-4, F-6), spin-orbit (zeta(4f)) and Racah parameters (E-1,E-2,E-3). The variation of these parameters with the alkali content is studied and the results nm discussed in the light of rite ligand field strength, glass structure cmd coordination of the N d3+ ion. The present method is found to be effective in getting new en ergy levels without diagonalising the 4f(3) energy matrix of the Nd3ion.
