This study examined over 530 British Superintendent police officers' r
eaction to stress. They were categorised into four groups : Type A int
ernal and external, and Type B internal and external locus of control.
Scores were obtaining relating to experience of work stress, job sati
sfaction and both mental and physical health. Two way ANOVAs (A/B type
; I/E locus of control) showed consistently no main effects for A/B t
ype or interactions but strong effects for internal vs external locus
of control. Externals expressed least job satisfaction ; internals exp
ressed least stress and most satisfaction. Locus of control was also c
learly linked to physical and psychological ill-health : Internal scor
ers indicated less mental and physical ill-health than externals. The
power of locus of control beliefs is discussed.
