E. Baron et al., COMPRESSION OF THE ESOPHAGUS BY THE SPINE AND THE AORTA IN UNTREATED SCOLIOSIS, Archives of orthopaedic and trauma surgery, 117(6-7), 1998, pp. 405-407
An adult patient with severe scoliosis secondary to familial dysautono
mia developed dysphagia and recurrent aspirations. Various imaging stu
dies showed a mechanical obstruction of the esophagus due to compressi
on between the spine and the aorta. The patient underwent a gastrostom
y and fundoplication, with a significant decrease in symptoms. The cas
e demonstrates one of the possible long-term consequences of untreated
scoliosis.
