Last December at the Chelsea Physic Garden, an extraordinary birthday
party was hosted by the Linnean Society of London. The birthday celebr
ation was unusual, not only because of the extreme age of the guest of
honour, but because of the guest's identity: one hundred and fifty pa
rticipants came to celebrate not a person, but a four century-old book
, The Herball, or General Natural History of Plants, by John Gerard.
