Abstract
We consider the two-dimensional membrane equations of a linearly elast ic clamped shell, whose middle surface is uniformly elliptic. We show that the introduction of an auxiliary first-order system, uniformly el liptic in the sense of S. Agmon, A. Douglis and L. Nirenberg, allows t o prove that these equations have a unique solution in the space H-0(1 ) x H-0(1) x L2.
