Liposidomycins are atypical lipid-bearing nucleoside antibiotics that
inhibit bacterial peptidoglycan synthesis. A producing strain was iden
tified as a Streptomyces sp. from its cultural characteristics and phy
siological properties. It produced new types of liposidomycins that la
cked sulfate and/or 3-methylglutaric acid moieties present in known li
posidomycins by changing medium components. Sucrose and malt extract w
ere particularly suitable sources for specific production of the new t
ypes of liposidomycins.
