The radio frequency (rf)-driven multicusp source was originally develo
ped for use in the superconducting super collider injector. The source
can routinely provide 30 mA of H-similar to beam at 0.1% duty factor.
By adding a minute quantity of cesium to the discharge, H- beam curre
nt in excess of 100 mA and e/H similar to 1 has been achieved. The rf-
driven H similar to source is being further developed for 6% duty fact
or operation to be used in the national spallation neutron source. App
lication of the rf-driven multicusp source has been extended to radioa
ctive ion beam production, ion projection lithography, and compact neu
tron tubes. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
