The results of investigations of the dual chamber PIG ion source with
plasma transport by crossed ExB fields are presented. The aim of the e
xperiments was to study the possibility of ion production in the PIG s
ource in two stages: plasma production in the first chamber and furthe
r ionization in the second chamber. The experiments on beam extraction
from both chambers by two independent extracting electrodes have show
n that the current extracted from the second chamber is determined mai
nly by the plasma flux from the first chamber. The charge state distri
bution of ions extracted from the second chamber is shifted to higher
charge states comparing with that measured for the first chamber. (C)
