The complexation of a series of bis(benzo crown ether)s of variable ri
ng size and length of the linking chain with Na+, K+ and Cs+ was studi
ed in the gas phase by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in nitr
obenzyl alcohol/glycerol as a matrix. Both 2:1 (conventionally within
the cavity of the crown ether units) and 1:1 complexes (a sandwich-lik
e structure) were found depending on the cavity size of the crown unit
s, the outer diameter of the complexing cations and the length and fle
xibility of the linking chain. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
