Abstract
The complexation of a series of bis(benzo crown ether)s of variable ri ng size and length of the linking chain with Na+, K+ and Cs+ was studi ed in the gas phase by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in nitr obenzyl alcohol/glycerol as a matrix. Both 2:1 (conventionally within the cavity of the crown ether units) and 1:1 complexes (a sandwich-lik e structure) were found depending on the cavity size of the crown unit s, the outer diameter of the complexing cations and the length and fle xibility of the linking chain.
