The characterization of the passive film formed on austenitic stainles
s steel (17% Cr-8% Ni) in a borate-boric acid solution at pH 9.2 was c
arried out by Auger electron spectroscopy. The quantitative approach u
sed gives exact information about thickness and structure of the diffe
rent layers which compose the passive films formed at various potentia
ls. The identification of the iron oxidation states and of the hydrate
d species, conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, complements
the analytical research.
