Abstract
We discuss two mechanisms for Lasing Without Inversion (LWI), Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) and Fano-type interferences without CPT. Wh ile LWI based on coherent population trapping is lasing with a ''hidde n'' inversion, the second mechanism is a pure interference effect. We show that electromagnetically induced transparency in a V-type three-l evel system is based on this second mechanism and discuss the importan ce of Fano-type interferences in the four-level Raman scheme in the pr esence of ground-state mixing collisions.
