B. Hommez et Ej. Goethals, DEGRADATION OF NYLON-6 BY GLYCOLYSIS - PART 1 - IDENTIFICATION OF DEGRADATION PRODUCTS, Journal of macromolecular science. Pure and applied chemistry, A35(9), 1998, pp. 1489-1505
Glycolysis of nylon-6, in the presence of phosphoric acid at 250 degre
es C, leads to a mixture of low molecular weight compounds, HPLC analy
sis combined with H-1-NMR and mass spectroscopy showed that the main d
egradation products were ethylene glycol derivatives of caprolactam an
d linear oligomers. No cyclic oligomers were found. Two types of linea
r oligomers were found i.e. with free carboxylic acid endgroups and wi
th the carboxylic acid endgroups esterified with ethylene glycol.
