Microporous gallophosphate cloverite has been studied by multinuclear
(C-13, F-19, P-31, Ga-71) solid-state n.m.r. spectroscopy. An extraord
inarily strong quadrupolar coupling is shown to be the reason for a mi
sleading line shape in Ga-71 MAS n.m.r. spectra. Using static Ga-71 n.
m.r. spectroscopy, an estimate of the size of this quadrupolar couplin
g can be obtained. The limitations of the MAS technique for the study
of quadrupolar nuclei in sites with very large quadrupolar couplings a
re addressed.
