Abstract
Calcium alpha-sialons, containing elongated grains, were developed by pressureless sintering. Preliminary electron microscopy analyses revea led the high aspect ratio of the alpha' grains resulted from preferred crystal growth in the [001] direction. Such grain morphologies offer hope for in-situ toughening of alpha-sialon materials via the promotio n of crack deflection and bridging during failure. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Limited.
