Abstract
Distinct mitochondrial DNA haplotypes, based on the presence or absenc e of a Tag I restriction site in the control region, distinguished lar gemouth bass Micropterus salmoides of the northern subspecies (N = 62) from the Florida subspecies (N = 28). The presence of either northern (N = 6) or Florida (N = 3) haplotypes in Lake Wateree, South Carolina , suggests that these haplotypes will be particularly useful in detect ing the coexistence of these subspecies.
